Hacksaw Ridge
9/10
A conscientious objector who doesn't believe in violence at all for religious reasons signs up to serve in World War II. He refuses to as much as touch a gun and he serves as a medic and saves dozens of lives. Based on a true story.
Good movie. Great acting performances. Wonderful story.

"Some prisoners spent more than ten years buried in solitary cells the size of coffins, hearing nothing but clanging bars or footsteps in the corridors. They survived because they could talk to each other by tapping on the wall. In that way, they told of dreams, memories, and fallings in and out of love; they discussed, embraced, and fought; they shared beliefs, beauties, doubts, guilts and those questions that have no answers.
When it is genuine, when it is born of the need to speak, no one can stop the human voice. When it is denied a mouth, it speaks with the hands, the eyes, the pores, or anything at all because every single one of us has something to say to the others, something that deserves to be celebrated or forgiven by others."-Eduardo Galeano

Precious
10/10

I can see why Monique won the Oscar. And it was nice to see Mariah Carey have a significant role in a movie that was critically acclaimed. The sad thing is that there are many kids in Precious' shoes and very few can get away from the abuser. The movie did shed light on how no one asks to be abused and that they can escape and have a chance of living a new and better life than before.

Helga: So I'm not Kate Moss. Big deal.
Milo: Kate Moss isn't stuck in a sewer.
Helga: Gee I don't know. When you think about it is there no sewer BIGGER than the world of professional modelling?

The Falling

Quirky movie about an outbreak of mass fainting at a Catholic girls' school in the late 60s. Creepy and tense, but slightly spoilt by an overly 'neat' ending.

Great performance by Maisie Williams.

History is the lies of the victors coupled with the delusions of the defeated. It is an imagined certainty created at the point where the imperfection of memory meets the inadequacy of documentation.

Mr Turner

This film received much critical praise.

I am unable to work out why.

The one movie that I watched that claimed so much critical aprise was a movie I absolutely hated. Something called "The Spectacular Now".

I know I mentioned that movie before, but I just couldn't understand why it got such high praise.

Lego Batman Movie: 10/10

It was just a silly movie, but it was really funny. I got what I paid for.

Snowden
9/10
Great movie about whistle blower Edward Snowden. Shows in detail exactly what the government was doing before he blew the whistle. Very little of the anti-civil liberties legislation that was passed under the Bush and Obama administrations had anything to do with actually fighting terrorism. Terrorism was just an excuse to do it.You may criticize the man, but the fact remains that the government was out of control (and sometimes still is) on the issue of defending our civil liberties. It's a crying shame that this movie was shut out of the Oscar nominations entirely. I think it was shut out for political reasons. No matter your politics, this was a great movie, and it should have been nominated for a number of awards including best lead actor, best director, best adapted screenplay, best new song by Peter Gabriel and maybe a few others including best picture. Who knows why the Academy does what it does?

Storks
5.5/10
Mediocre animated comedy about storks delivering things. It has a lot communication jokes and banter that's supposed to be funny, but it just isn't. Mediocre at best.

Far from the Madding Crowd

The recent adaptation by Thomas Vinterberg.

Good film, with some superb visuals and an insightful performance by Carey Mulligan. Feels a little perfunctory in comparison to the 1967 version, which is nearly an hour longer.
