Italian salami on wholemeal bread.

History is the lies of the victors coupled with the delusions of the defeated. It is an imagined certainty created at the point where the imperfection of memory meets the inadequacy of documentation.

Porridge

Or, as Americans inexplicably call it, oatmeal.

That's a good point. Why on Earth would we call a grain meal made from oats oatmeal?

The dry product is called 'oatmeal', 'meal' in this sense meaning 'grains ground to a coarse powder.

Calling the finished product 'oatmeal' is like calling bread 'wheat flour'.

Or calling cooked meat "meat". Or calling cooked eggs "eggs". Or calling potatoes that have been mashed "mashed potatoes".

On a similar note, I always find it amusing when cake recipes start off with "Put four large eggs in a bowl and whisk until fluffy".

No mention of breaking the eggs first and discarding the shells ...

I guess if you can't figure that part out on your own, that's your problem.
