RIP Anthony Bourdain

Farewell to a gifted chef, writer, and travel host. His documentaries about faraway lands and cities never failed to introduce viewers to interesting and relevant facts, and he made his visits all the more meaningful by adding the element of local human interest. This geography/food nerd will miss him dearly.

I don't get it. Whatever I'm doing to try to fit in here, it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe I should make peace with the fact that I'm an outsider wherever I go.

I'm not anti-social; I'm just not user friendly.

Travelling a lot, as he did, and constantly having to adjust quickly to new time zones due to tight work schedules, can bring on severe bouts of depression. For someone with a predisposition towards depression that can be a bad combination, all alone in a hotel room and a long way from support. Particularly when you're a professional entertainer and you know how to pretend that everything is okay.

I loved his shows. It is very sad.

Interesting observation about the connection between depression and extensive travel. Never thought about it that way, but it makes sense.

It's a shame what happened to Bourdain; my heart goes out to his family and friends. Hopefully we as a society will use high-profile celebrity suicides like his as a reason to start discussing the subject of suicide in a more understanding and compassionate manner.

I was having a conversation with someone recently. Sometimes depression is reactive and caused by an event such as the death of someone close or illness, accident, victim or witness to crime etc. Some depression just is a person's brain. There is no precipitating event.

I used to have a job that involved extensive long-haul travel. And depression came with the territory for many of the staff. I remember hearing stories of people losing the plot in airports.

It's gone the opposite way now. Managers figure if you've got an internet connection you don't need to travel.

But sitting at home working long hours without too much real social contact with peers can be stressful and isolating.

The ideal situation is having a short commute to work even if it is to your home office. Break times and meal breaks where you can actually leave the workplace or your phone. After work you LEAVE work amd not have to keep checking messages. You have time for taking care of your personal life and for some other interest or hobbie and family outside of work. Not too many people have that.
