How common is hidden camera use?
I had exactly two nanny jobs. The first one used at least two hidden cameras for the first two weeks that I worked there. I did ask if cameras might or might not be used. But the kids were old enough to tell on me anyway. After that I could not worry about being spied on. Not that I did anything bad except maybe let the kids watch some tv when they finished homework or I “snacked”.

The second home I suspect now they had hidden cameras in all the rooms including the kids bedrooms and the BATHROOMS. This does bother me since this family was vile in how they treated me and especially how badly they treated their own kids.

So now I am looking for another job and worried about hidden cameras again. I tend to work fast at cleaning and like to take a break. Also I am totally against being filmed using the bathroom or have my bum filmed while I am bending over cleaning.

Can I ask the employers to sign some type of agreement that they will not put cameras in the bathroom I use room or I might change clothing in? (such as a bedroom where I am sleeping over). I am also worried about people recording video or audio of me and posting up on social media or people making porn of me or their kids. Is that reasonable?

Also I would never post up photos of people’s dogs or kids on the internet. I do take photos of my current employers dogs and show my friends but never their kids.

I heard about nannies getting fired just for asking around the neighbourhood for jobs which is stupid. I look at these articles where people complain about their nannies for the most stupid reasons.

We had a few maids and nannies when we lived in Indonesia and about half of them stole stuff.

Unfortunately you are likely to be employed by people with similar experiences.

I would straight up ask which places you can use with a guarantee of privacy. Nobody wants to be filmed in the toilet obviously.

I can understand people putting cameras for theft. Many workplaces and stores have security cameras but there is still theft and other crime happening.

Should I bring up the issue at the interview? I think I will because the last time I forgot and that family was really bad. They never had anything that anyone would want to steal.

The only thing I do is snack or take food out of the garbage.

I would only ask that if they have cameras or if they plan to have cameras, you need privacy to use the bathroom or change your clothes.

That sounds like a better polite way to explain my concern.

I think also idea about privacy. I wouldn’t put photos or video of their home, children or pets on social media and I expect they are not going to put up “look at this video of our housekeeper cleaning or falling down” on youtube. I suspect bad employer was making porn videos of me using their bathroom and selling it on the internet. I was suspicious when she asked me to wash the stairs and I knew there was a camera at the foot of the stairs. I was wearing shorts and that is not a flattering view so I covered the camera. She got angry. Of course I cleaned the stairs which was what she wanted. I just never found out about the bathroom cameras for sure until after I stopped working there. So to go to police I would need proof. I know I saw an unmarked police car outside their house at one point.

I might also have to watch the snacking with a new job. I don’t think it is any big deal but some people munching a few crackers as theft. Some people actually get upset if you use their milk for coffee. I just buy more or don’t use it if there is only enough left for their morning coffee.

I would ask if I should bring my own snacks and coffee and milk. I have had one job out of about 10 where they didn't supply coffee and tea and milk. Most office jobs in Australia also supplies cookies and fruit. Most people wouldn't have an issue but it is good to check. Bringing a few snacks and some long life milk and instant coffee to work would cost only a few dollars. Asking shows that you are honest and straightforward.

The issue is taking up space in their fridge. Also they tend to use/eat my food when I leave it there. Then I have to bring a huge bag everyday. It really depends in the family/employer. Some people are really cheap and others more generous. I have had people adulterate my food at work before so some places you need to have a locked cupboard for any personal belongings.
