Star Trek the recent reboot movie. 7/9. I enjoyed it, but it was quite silly.

Van Helsing

Lot's of nods to the Universal Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman and Mummy films of the 1930s and 40s.

Brings the franchises, mentioned above, together as well as several others.

Watchable with some decent action scenes.

Pretty epic vampire lord vs werewolf fight.

Decent monster designs, especially the Frankenstein monster who looks like a steam punk android.

Good sets and backgrounds for the labs and castles, not as good as the Hammer films IMO.

Several moments of 'I call bullshit' characters can survive beatings, falls of up to 400 ft, there's a hilarious sequence in which a horse drawn coach jumps over a canyon and even extras (like the unwashed villagers) can be thrown around, beaten, blown up or almost impaled and not have a scratch on them. In fact, this kind of ruined the ending for me, I won't say why in case anyone wants to check the film out but you basically see someone get the crap kicked out of them for ten minutes and die, because someone was "too rough with them." There's no physical injury shown on them either.

One of few movies to feature the Frankenstein monster and Dracula and THEY NEVER FIGHT! URGH! It took 40 years for them to appear on screen together, that film was crap and the fight was in the dark, so you couldn't see it (with poor editing to boot). Several Dracula VS Frankenstein films have been made but only the aforementioned movie, made in the early 70s actually had the monsters fight, the rest end with a brawl between Dracula and the wolfman. I felt a great opportunity was missed here, even if it was a dumb cage match in the special features.

I got the uneasy feeling that the writers and directors missed the point of some of the monsters and characters that they wished to portray.

Not a terrible flick but it isn't a master piece, I'm not surprised that it was quickly forgotten as it leaves no lasting print on the brain.
I actually struggled to write this, because I'd forgotten what I wanted to complain about (though I do have a head cold).

Not a bad twist on the old stories, it's nice that they come together in a way similar to Tell Tale's up and coming "A wolf among us."
It has a lot of problems but it doesn't leave a bitter taste in your mouth...

ADHD Version: 6/10

Best Kept Secret: One of the most thought-provoking and insightful movies I've ever seen, and also one of the saddest. It's all about a school for children with autism in inner-city Newark, New Jersey. 10/10. Too bad it's not on the PBS website anymore...
